감상

이 영화는 딸의 결혼을 앞둔 아버지의 미묘한 심리를 코믹하게 그린 가족 영화이다. 아버지인 조지는 유학중인 딸이 돌아와 결혼하겠다는 폭탄 선언을 하자 마음이 복잡해진다. 조지의 눈에는 그의 딸인 애니가 아직 어리게만 보인다. 딸을 아직 보내고 싶지 않는 마음에 사윗감인 브라이언에 대해 실업자, 아부쟁이라며 트집을 잡지를 않나, 일종의 신경과민에 빠져 버린다. "we could have parked our whole house in the foyer."라고 재미있게 표현한 것처럼 매우 큰 집을 가진 부자인 사돈댁에 가서 사고도 치고, 게다가 결혼식에 드는 비용이 또한 만만치 않아 조지를 더 심난하게 만든다. 크고 작은 소동 중에도 결혼 준비는 계속되고 마침내 조지와 브라이언은 멋진 결혼을 하게 되고 신혼여행을 떠나게 된다. 마지막에 이런저런 뒤치다꺼리를 하느라 인사를 못한 조지에게 애니에게 전화가 와 사랑한다고 말하며 끝이 나게 된다. 영화중에 조지의 'Right then I realized, my day had passed. she'll always love me, of course, but not in the same way. I was no longer the man in my little girl's life. I was like an old shoe. The kind we manufacture and get all excited about, then after a few years discontinue. That was me now. Mr. discontinued' 이렇게 독백한 표현에는 자기를 단종된 신발에 비유하며 아버지의 서운한 마음이 잘 드러나 있는 것 같아 재미있었고 내가 만약 나중에 결혼을 해 딸이 생기고 나중에 결혼을 시키게 된다면 조지와 비슷한 마음이 들 것 같다고 생각했다.
